Every basketball fan has been in the middle of a heated argument over which player is better. The CourtVision Debate Settler removes the bias by putting raw statistics head to head. We compare players across ten major statistical categories, including points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, field goal percentage, three-point percentage, free throw percentage, minutes, and turnovers. Each category produces a winner, and the player who claims the most categories earns the statistical edge. While numbers never tell the complete story of basketball, they provide an objective starting point that cuts through opinion and recency bias.
The greatest-of-all-time debate is basketball's most enduring argument. Whether you favor Michael Jordan's six championships, LeBron James's longevity and versatility, or newer stars pushing the boundaries of modern basketball, the Debate Settler gives you a framework to compare any two players. Beyond the GOAT conversation, use it to evaluate MVP candidates, compare players at the same position, or settle arguments about who deserves All-Star nods. The tool works best when you combine the statistical verdict with context from our player comparison tool and advanced analytics.
The Debate Settler evaluates ten categories equally. For counting stats (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks), higher is better. For efficiency stats (FG%, 3P%, FT%), higher is also better. For turnovers, fewer is better, meaning the player with fewer turnovers per game wins that category. Ties in individual categories are recorded but do not count toward either player's total. The overall winner is simply the player who wins more categories. In the event of a tie across all categories, both players are declared equal.
Select any two NBA players from the dropdown menus, then click "Settle It." The tool compares their current-season statistics across ten categories and declares a winner based on who leads in more categories. You get a full breakdown showing each category, the values for both players, and which player won each matchup.
Statistics provide an objective foundation for player comparisons, but basketball is more than numbers. Leadership, clutch performance, defensive impact, and team context all matter. The Debate Settler gives you a data-driven starting point, but the best debates combine stats with the eye test and contextual analysis from tools like our head-to-head records and lineup analysis.
It depends on the comparison. When evaluating scorers, PPG and shooting efficiency (FG%, 3P%) carry the most weight. For playmakers, assists and turnovers are key. Defensive comparisons should emphasize steals, blocks, and defensive rating. Our tool treats all categories equally, but you can weigh the results based on what matters most for your specific debate.
