NBA transactions shape the league landscape throughout the season and offseason. From blockbuster trades to under-the-radar waiver pickups, every roster move can change a team's trajectory. CourtVision's transaction tracker aggregates trades, signings, waivers, and other roster moves in real time so you never miss a deal. Understanding the types of transactions and when they occur is essential for following the NBA's ever-evolving competitive balance.
Trades involve two or more teams exchanging players and/or draft picks. Trades must comply with salary matching rules under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, meaning teams cannot take on significantly more salary than they send out unless they have cap space or trade exceptions. Signings occur when teams add free agents, whether during the offseason, after the start of the season, or via 10-day contracts. Waivers happen when a team releases a player from their roster, making them available for other teams to claim within 48 hours.
The NBA trade deadline typically falls in mid-February, usually around the Thursday before the All-Star break. After this date, teams cannot trade players until the offseason. The deadline often produces a flurry of activity as contenders look to add pieces for a playoff push while rebuilding teams sell off veterans for draft picks and young talent. Some of the biggest trades in NBA history have happened at or just before the deadline.
Every NBA transaction is governed by the salary cap, which sets a limit on how much teams can spend on player salaries. The NBA uses a soft cap, meaning teams can exceed it using certain exceptions (such as the Bird exception to re-sign their own players). However, teams that exceed the luxury tax threshold must pay a tax penalty on every dollar over the line. Understanding the salary cap is key to understanding why certain trades happen and why some moves that seem obvious never materialize.
The main types are trades (players and/or picks exchanged between teams), free agent signings (adding uncontracted players), waivers (releasing players from the roster), two-way contract conversions, 10-day contracts, and draft-related transactions. Each type has specific rules governing when and how it can occur under the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The NBA trade deadline typically falls in mid-February, usually the Thursday before All-Star Weekend. After the deadline, teams cannot trade players until the offseason begins following the NBA Finals. The buyout market opens after the trade deadline, allowing waived players to sign with new teams for the remainder of the season.
When a team waives a player, they release them from their contract. The player then goes through a 48-hour waiver period during which other teams can claim them and assume their contract. If no team claims the player, they become an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team. Players waived after the trade deadline can sign with playoff-bound teams if they clear waivers.
Teams over the salary cap must match salaries within a certain range when making trades. Generally, the incoming salary cannot exceed the outgoing salary by more than 125% plus $100,000. Teams with cap space below the cap can absorb salary without matching. Trade exceptions, generated from previous trades, can also be used to absorb incoming salary without sending out equivalent value.
