Measuring NBA Defense Statistically
Defense is notoriously hard to measure with box score stats alone. Steals and blocks capture disruptive plays but miss positioning, communication, and deterrence. Our defensive score uses available stats as a proxy while acknowledging these limitations.
Steals are weighted at 2.5x because perimeter disruption is rare and valuable. Blocks at 2x capture rim protection. Rebounding (0.3x) reflects defensive board control. Low turnovers add a discipline bonus, as the best defenders rarely gamble recklessly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why not use defensive rating?
Defensive rating requires lineup data that we don't have in our current dataset. We use individual defensive stats as the best available proxy for overall defensive impact.
Can guards make All-Defensive teams?
Absolutely. Guards who lead the league in steals frequently make All-Defensive teams. Players like Jrue Holiday and Marcus Smart have shown that perimeter defense is equally valued.
How does this compare to actual voting?
Our model is stats-based while actual voting includes film study, reputation, and narrative. Players with strong 'brand' on defense sometimes make the team over statistically superior candidates.
