Scoring versatility measures how balanced a player's scoring output is across all three shooting types: field goals, three-pointers, and free throws. Players who shoot well from everywhere on the court are harder to defend because teams cannot employ a single defensive strategy against them.
Players like Kevin Durant and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander exemplify scoring versatility: they score efficiently from two-point range, beyond the arc, and at the free-throw line. This three-level scoring makes them nearly impossible to game-plan for.
The index measures the balance across FG%, 3P%, and FT% (less variance = more balanced), then adds a volume bonus for high scorers. A perfectly balanced, high-volume scorer would approach a score of 90+.
Versatile scorers force defenses to guard every area of the court. A player who can only score at the rim can be schemed against, but a three-level scorer creates mismatches that are nearly impossible to solve.
Not necessarily. Some specialists (elite three-point shooters, dominant post players) provide enormous value through their specialty. But all else equal, versatility creates more scoring options and makes offenses harder to defend.
