Clutch performance is one of the most debated topics in basketball. The NBA defines clutch time as the final 5 minutes of the 4th quarter or overtime when the score is within 5 points. In these high-pressure moments, some players elevate their game while others struggle under the spotlight.
Our Clutch Rating provides a data-driven approach to measuring who performs best when it matters most. By weighting five key factors — scoring ability, shooting efficiency, free throw accuracy, ball security, and defensive impact — the rating captures the multifaceted nature of clutch performance. A player who scores 30 PPG but shoots poorly and turns the ball over frequently in crunch time is less clutch than a 25 PPG scorer with elite efficiency and ball security.
Free throw shooting is weighted at 20% because it becomes disproportionately important in close games. In the final two minutes, trailing teams foul to stop the clock, putting the leading team's free throw shooters on the line repeatedly. Players like Stephen Curry who shoot above 90% from the line are invaluable in these situations.
Ball security may seem underweighted at 15%, but turnovers in clutch time are devastating. A single turnover can swing a close game, turning a potential go-ahead basket into a fast-break opportunity for the opponent. Players who protect the ball under pressure — maintaining composure against traps, double teams, and aggressive defense — consistently give their teams the best chance to win.
