Points per possession (PPP) is the gold standard for measuring offensive efficiency. Unlike raw scoring totals, PPP accounts for pace — a team that scores 115 points at a fast pace may actually be less efficient than a team scoring 108 at a slow pace. In the 2025-26 season, the most efficient teams combine high shooting percentages with smart shot selection.
Teams like the Denver Nuggets lead the league by generating quality looks and converting at elite rates. The modern NBA has shifted heavily toward three-point shooting and rim attacks, with mid-range shots declining league-wide.
Our efficiency model estimates PPP from available data including field goal percentage, three-point percentage, pace estimates, and win rate. For the most accurate offensive ratings, advanced play-by-play data would provide possession-level precision.
Points per possession (PPP) measures how many points a team scores on average each time they have the ball. An elite NBA offense typically scores around 1.15-1.20 PPP, while league average hovers near 1.10.
Total points are heavily influenced by pace. A team playing fast gets more possessions, inflating their scoring totals. PPP normalizes for pace and reveals how efficiently a team converts each opportunity into points.
Teams improve efficiency by taking high-value shots (threes and layups), reducing turnovers, improving free throw rate, and running effective offensive schemes that create open looks for shooters.
Three-point shooting is the single biggest lever for offensive efficiency. A 35% three-point shooter produces 1.05 points per attempt, equal to a 52.5% two-point shooter. This math drives the modern NBA's three-point revolution.
