NBA team rankings provide a multi-dimensional view of how all 30 franchises stack up across the league. While simple win-loss records tell part of the story, diving into offensive efficiency, defensive toughness, and pace of play reveals the true character of each team. CourtVision's team rankings combine live standings data with estimated efficiency metrics to give fans, analysts, and fantasy players a comprehensive picture of every team's strengths and weaknesses.
Offensive rating measures a team's scoring efficiency relative to its possessions. Teams with high offensive ratings typically feature elite scorers, strong ball movement, and efficient shot selection. Our offensive rating estimation draws from the combined scoring output of each team's roster, providing a view of raw firepower. A team ranking in the top 5 offensively is highlighted in green, while bottom 5 teams appear in red.
Defensive rating estimates how many points a team allows per 100 possessions — the lower the better. Elite defensive teams typically feature rim protectors, disciplined perimeter defenders, and strong team communication. Our defensive estimates correlate with win percentage, since historically, teams that win more tend to be better defensively. The best defensive teams keep their rating below 106, while struggling defenses may allow 112 or more.
Net rating is the difference between offensive and defensive rating. Positive net ratings indicate a team scores more than it allows per 100 possessions, while negative net ratings indicate the opposite. Championship-caliber teams typically post net ratings above +5.0. Net rating is widely regarded as one of the best predictors of postseason success.
Pace measures the number of possessions a team uses per game. Faster teams (higher pace) create more scoring opportunities but also give opponents more chances to score. Slower teams (lower pace) tend to play more methodically, emphasizing half-court execution. Understanding pace is crucial for fantasy basketball, as players on high-pace teams accumulate counting stats more quickly.
CourtVision ranks all 30 NBA teams using four categories: Overall (win percentage), Offense (estimated from roster scoring output), Defense (inverse of implied opponent scoring based on record), and Pace (estimated possessions per game). Each category can be viewed independently.
Offensive rating estimates how many points a team scores per 100 possessions. CourtVision approximates this from the combined scoring averages of a team's roster players, giving a snapshot of raw scoring firepower.
Defensive rating estimates how many points a team allows per 100 possessions. A lower defensive rating is better. CourtVision estimates this from team win percentage, since stronger defensive teams typically win more games.
Team rankings update every hour using live standings data from ESPN. As games are completed and records change, the rankings automatically recalculate.
Pace measures the number of possessions a team uses per 48 minutes. Teams with a higher pace play faster, leading to more shot attempts and typically higher-scoring games. Teams with a lower pace play a more deliberate, half-court style.
