Offensive rating is the gold standard for measuring team scoring efficiency. Unlike raw points per game, ORtg adjusts for pace to reveal how well a team converts each possession into points. Championship-caliber offenses typically rank in the top 5 leaguewide, combining elite shot-making with low turnover rates and strong offensive rebounding.
The best NBA offenses share common traits: a primary ball-handler who can create for himself and others, floor spacing from multiple three-point shooters, an efficient interior scorer, and a system that generates open looks consistently. Ball movement, off-ball cutting, and limiting turnovers are the hallmarks of sustainable offensive success.
Field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and free throw percentage combine to tell the full story of a team's shooting prowess. Teams that excel in all three categories — known as "true shooting" — are virtually unstoppable when their shots are falling. The modern NBA has shifted toward three-point volume, but the most efficient offenses balance perimeter shooting with paint touches and trips to the free throw line.
Offensive rating (ORtg) estimates how many points a team scores per 100 possessions. Higher is better. Elite offenses typically post ratings above 115. CourtVision estimates ORtg from roster scoring output, shooting efficiency, and win percentage.
Based on estimated offensive rating, the Milwaukee Bucks lead the league with an ORtg of 122, followed by the Phoenix Suns (121.5) and the Los Angeles Lakers (121.3).
Pace measures possessions per game. Higher-pace teams get more shot attempts but offensive rating normalizes for pace by measuring points per 100 possessions. A slower team can still have a great ORtg if they score efficiently on each possession.
Teams that play at a very fast pace accumulate high point totals but may waste possessions with turnovers or poor shot selection. Offensive rating per 100 possessions strips out pace effects to reveal true efficiency.
