Estimated offensive output per 100 possessions. Higher is better — elite offensive players generate more points efficiently.
Offensive Rating (ORTG) estimates how many points a player helps produce per 100 possessions. Our model factors in scoring volume (PPG), efficiency (FG%), playmaking (APG), free throw accuracy (FT%), and turnover cost (TOPG). This creates a comprehensive view of offensive contribution that rewards both scorers and facilitators.
Players like Nikola Jokic score highly because they combine efficient scoring with elite playmaking, maximizing every possession they touch. Pure scorers who also maintain high efficiency, like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, also rank highly due to their efficient volume scoring.
An individual ORTG above 115 is excellent, above 120 is elite. For reference, the best offensive teams in the league produce around 115-120 points per 100 possessions.
NBA.com uses play-by-play data to calculate true on-court offensive rating. Our estimate uses box score approximation, which correlates well but may differ for players whose impact extends beyond traditional stats (e.g., gravity, screening).
Turnovers have asymmetric impact — they waste a possession AND often lead to opponent fast-break points. A turnover costs roughly 2 points in expected value, making ball security crucial for offensive efficiency.
