Net Rating is widely considered the single best measure of team quality in basketball. By calculating the difference between how many points a team scores and allows per 100 possessions, it strips away the effects of pace and provides an apples-to-apples comparison across all 30 NBA teams.
Offensive Rating (ORtg) measures scoring efficiency, while Defensive Rating (DRtg) measures defensive efficiency. A team can be elite by dominating on one end (like the 2025-26 Orlando Magic offense) or by excelling on both ends simultaneously.
Historically, championship teams tend to have a net rating above +5.0. The greatest teams of all time — the 2016-17 Warriors, 1995-96 Bulls, and 2007-08 Celtics — all posted net ratings above +10.0. Teams with negative net ratings are typically lottery-bound, though some may steal a low playoff seed through clutch play and favorable scheduling.
One key advantage of net rating over win-loss record is that it accounts for margin of victory. A team that wins most of its games by 20+ points but loses a few close ones may have a better net rating than a team that wins close games consistently. Over the long run, the team with the higher net rating is typically the stronger team.
