Player movement data: speed, distance, touches, and passes for every NBA player.

Since the 2013-14 season, every NBA arena has been equipped with a camera-based tracking system (currently Second Spectrum, formerly SportVU) that captures player and ball movement 25 times per second. This produces over 1 million data points per game.
Speed measures average movement velocity during live game action (excluding dead balls). Point guards like Luka Doncic and Stephen Curry cover enormous ground through constant off-ball movement and transition play.
Touches and passes reveal play style — high-touch players are typically primary ball handlers, while high-pass players are elite playmakers. Nikola Jokic consistently ranks among the leaders in both categories, reflecting his unique role as a center who runs the offense.
These tracking metrics complement traditional and advanced stats by revealing the "how" behind the numbers. For effort-based metrics, see our hustle stats page, or return to the full statistics hub.
