The Mikan Drill is one of the most foundational basketball drills ever created. Named after George Mikan, the NBA's first dominant big man, this drill develops soft touch, hand-eye coordination, and finishing ability around the basket. It's used by players at every level from youth leagues to the NBA. The drill focuses on making continuous layups from both sides of the basket without letting the ball touch the ground.
Stand on the right side of the basket, directly under the rim
Make a right-handed layup off the backboard
Catch the ball out of the net without letting it bounce
Immediately take one step to the left side
Make a left-handed layup off the backboard
Continue alternating sides for the set duration
Aim for 20-30 makes in one minute
Focus on using the backboard — aim for the top corner of the square
Keep the ball high — don't bring it below your chin between shots
Use proper footwork: right foot plants for left-hand layup, left foot for right
Increase speed gradually as your touch improves
