Defense is harder to measure than offense, but steals, blocks, defensive rebounds, and ball security provide meaningful signals. The Defensive Rating composite weights steals and blocks heavily as direct defensive actions, with rebounds and low turnovers contributing to overall defensive impact.
This tool is ideal for identifying the best two-way players, comparing DPOY candidates, or evaluating which defenders bring the most value. Combine with the All-Around comparison for a complete picture.
It's a weighted formula: SPG x 25 + BPG x 30 + RPG x 5 + (100 - TOPG x 8). Steals and blocks carry the heaviest weight as they directly prevent opponent scoring opportunities.
No single stat captures defense perfectly. On-ball pressure, help defense positioning, and communication aren't in box scores. This rating captures measurable defensive impact, which correlates well with advanced defensive metrics.
