Per-game stats are the most commonly cited numbers, but they can be misleading when comparing players who play different minutes. A player averaging 20 PPG in 28 minutes is more efficient than one averaging 22 PPG in 38 minutes. Per-36 and per-100 possessions help level the playing field.
Per-36 minutes normalizes stats to what a player would produce if they played 36 minutes per game. This is calculated by dividing the per-game stat by actual minutes played and multiplying by 36. This is useful for evaluating bench players or those on minutes restrictions.
Per-100 possessions normalizes for pace of play. A team that plays at a faster pace will naturally accumulate more counting stats. Per-100 adjusts for this, making it easier to compare players across different teams and eras. Shooting percentages remain unchanged in all modes since they are already rate statistics.
Shooting percentages (FG%, 3P%, FT%) are already rate-based stats, not counting stats. They measure efficiency per attempt regardless of minutes played, so they don't need normalization.
Use per-36 to compare players with different workloads on the same team or in the same era. Use per-100 possessions to compare across different teams or eras with different pace of play.
Per-36 stats can be inflated for players with very low minutes. A player averaging 5 MPG might have extreme per-36 numbers because the sample is small. Use caution with players under 15 MPG.
